charity: water

charity: water brings clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Right now, one billion people on the planet don’t have access to clean, safe drinking water. That’s one in eight of us. Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all sickness and disease, killing more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. charity: water raises awareness and provides ways for people to get involved and raise funds for sustainable water solutions, like freshwater wells, rainwater catchments, and spring protections. We give 100% of the money raised to direct project costs, funding sustainable clean water solutions in areas of greatest need. Just $20 can give one person in a developing nation clean water for 20 years. In the three years since charity: water was started, over $11 million has been raised, funding 1,396 water projects, serving over 700,000 people in 16 developing nations. More than 60,000 people globally have gotten involved and contributed, with the average donation being less than $200. To date, 658 water projects have been completed, with 740 more currently in progress, including both new and rehabilitated water systems. We work with 23 partner organizations in 16 countries (Bangladesh, Cambodia, Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Honduras, India, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda). Our goal is to provide one million people with access to clean, safe water by the end of 2009, and to serve 10 million people by the end of 2014.
